2025 Grafton Monster Festival in Grafton, WV

Updated: Jun 6

Mark your calendars for June 13-14, 2025, because the Grafton Monster Festival is back for its second year in downtown Grafton, West Virginia.

This celebration of the legendary Grafton Monster—a headless, seal-skinned cryptid first spotted in 1964—promises a weekend packed with spooky fun, Appalachian folklore, and community spirit.

I was born and raised in the beautiful and rugged landscapes of West Virginia, a state renowned for its rich folklore and captivating tales of the unknown. Growing up in this region, I developed a deep fascination with cryptids—those elusive creatures that often inhabit the shadows of our imaginations and the dense forests that blanket the Appalachian Mountains. My knowledge about these mysterious beings extends far beyond casual interest; it is rooted in a lifetime of exploration, research, and storytelling that has been passed down through generations in my family.

Cryptids like the Mothman, the Flatwoods Monster, and the Snallygaster are not just figments of local legend; they are integral parts of the cultural fabric of West Virginia. Each tale carries with it a sense of wonder and caution, often serving as a reminder of the untamed wilderness that surrounds us. I remember as a child, sitting around with my friends and family, listening intently as they recounted their own encounters and the eerie experiences in the area. These stories, filled with suspense and intrigue, sparked my curiosity and compelled me to delve deeper into the lore surrounding these enigmatic creatures.

My family still resides in West Virginia, and every visit back home reinforces the connection I feel to the land and its mysteries. The lush hills and winding rivers are not merely a backdrop; they are a living testament to the legends that have shaped our understanding of the world. I often find myself wandering through the forests, recalling the tales of Bigfoot sightings and strange noises that echo through the trees at night. This intimate relationship with the environment has allowed me to appreciate the beauty and the eerie stillness that can sometimes feel alive with the whispers of the past.

Moreover, my passion for cryptids has led me to engage with local communities and participate in various events, such as cryptid conventions and folklore festivals. These gatherings bring together enthusiasts and experts alike, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared fascination. Here, I have had the opportunity to exchange stories, gather new insights, and even conduct research that sheds light on the cultural significance of these creatures in the Appalachian region.

My upbringing in West Virginia, coupled with my family's enduring presence there, has cultivated a profound appreciation for cryptids and the stories that surround them. This connection is not just a personal interest; it is a cherished part of my identity, intertwining my love for my home state with the mysteries that continue to captivate both locals and visitors alike.

In my newest book, The Grafton Monster & Flatwoods Monster Connection, I dive deeper into this personal connection I have as well as the investigative journalism I have done on this theory.  It will also be out on June 13th, the same time as The Grafton Monster Festival, so be sure to follow my socials and BMK Publishing.

Organized by Alicia Lyons and supported by the Taylor County Commission and Grafton City Council, this event is set to draw hundreds from across the country to celebrate Grafton’s unique place in West Virginia’s cryptid lore. Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or just looking for a fun weekend, the Grafton Monster Festival has something for everyone.
