Disney Patents Fiery Magic Mirror Effect for Villains Land at Magic Kingdom

A freshly granted Imagineering patent for programmable fabric flames includes a face rising from the fire that looks remarkably like the Magic Mirror. It may be the first real glimpse of how the Evil Queen’s dark ride will come alive.

Imagineering just filed the kind of quiet little magic that makes Disney fans lean in closer.

On November 3, 2026, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Disney’s “Fan Effect System” (US-12784619-B1). It was filed back in July 2025 by four Central Florida Imagineers: Daniel Joseph, Jessica Klouda, Jason Monahan, and Miles Maline.

The technology is an upgraded version of the classic silk-flame effect we’ve seen for years.

Instead of simple fabric and LEDs, it uses a high-speed brushless fan (capable of pushing air up to 60 meters per second), nearly transparent synthetic fabric, and video projection. The result is flames that can shoot higher, move on cue, change direction, and even carry projected images — all without real fire.

What has everyone talking is one of the patent drawings. It shows a face rising out of the flames. Look closely and it strongly resembles the Magic Mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

That matters because Villains Land at Magic Kingdom already has a confirmed dark ride built around the Magic Mirror. At D23 this summer, Disney revealed that guests will enter the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace, where the Mirror will guide them into the Mirror Realm to encounter other Disney villains. Special effects and physical set pieces will bring that ethereal space to life.

The patent does not name a specific park or attraction, and patents are never a guarantee of what will actually be built. Still, the timing and the illustration feel intentional. A safer, more controllable, more theatrical flame effect would be a natural fit for a ride that is already being described as highly theatrical.

Villains Land itself is still years away — construction is underway in the former Rivers of America area, and the land is expected to be on the scale of Galaxy’s Edge. But little details like this are how the story starts to feel real.

The Magic Mirror has always appeared through flame and smoke when the Evil Queen summons him. Now Imagineering may have found a way to make that moment bigger, brighter, and more alive than ever before.
