Patrick Stewart, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek, Dies at 86
We share this with heavy hearts. Sir Patrick Stewart, the distinguished British actor who brought Captain Jean-Luc Picard to life for generations of Star Trek fans, has died. He was 86.

Stewart passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends, including his wife Sunny Ozell. According to the statement shared by his longtime spokesperson, he had been on “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.” The family described a peaceful final hours filled with music, prayer, laughter, and love, and asked that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s research and caregiver support.
For so many in our community, Stewart will always be Picard—the calm, principled captain who took the bridge of the Enterprise-D in 1987 and carried the franchise into a new era of thoughtful science fiction. From Star Trek: The Next Generation through the films and the later Star Trek: Picard series, he gave the character a dignity and moral center that still resonates. Star Trek has long been a touchstone for people who look to the stars with wonder, curiosity, and hope; Picard’s steady hand at the helm felt like a promise that exploration could be both bold and kind.
Stewart’s career reached far beyond the final frontier. Classically trained, he spent years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, bringing gravitas to roles on stage and screen. To a new generation he became Professor Charles Xavier, the wise and compassionate leader of the X-Men, a role he continued into the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios remembered him as “a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman.”
Born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, in 1940, Stewart never lost the grounded humanity that made his larger-than-life characters feel real. He was knighted in 2010, and throughout his life he supported causes close to his heart, including human rights, domestic-violence survivors, veterans’ mental health, and animal welfare.
He is survived by his wife Sunny and his children Daniel and Sophie.
In our community, where Star Trek has always been more than just a show, the loss of Picard feels personal. May he rest in peace among the stars he helped us dream about.
